Letter from Délia

Dear Friends,
I am knocking on your e-door to tell you that I opened my eyes to this world at 5 a.m. this morning in my parents’ home. I surprised my parents, who were preparing for a 20-hour marathon, and were stuck with me in six hours.
After the hard work, I am now resting in my cradle, protected from the sun of this year’s first real, beautiful spring day with a baldachin my mother made out of her wedding dress. I weigh 2.9 kilos (6 pounds and 6 ounces). Sounds like they are going to call me Délia – a name my grandfather recommended after reading the obituaries in a recent issue of the Quebec City daily. Luckily, Délia is spelled and pronounced the same in French and Hungarian.
I am only seven hours old and I have a lot to learn about the ways of this world of yours. But there is one thing I already know: home birth is great.
After numerous false contractions I gave to my mother in the past month – most notably during Puccini’s Turandot two weeks ago – I finally decided it was time to show up at 11 last night, an hour after my parents went to bed. At 12:30 my Dad woke up, too, and Mom`s contractions started getting real tough. They called the midwife at 2 a.m. and my grandmother two hours later. Moving back and forth between the bedroom and the bathroom, my mother’s singing cries -- completely out of tune -- kept neighbors awake on both sides. By 5 o’clock this morning I was out, getting used to breathing on my own in my mother’s arms. I was left in peace in the dimly lit room, hooked on my umbilical cord for an hour and a half. Mom and Dad found me so cute that they have postponed my first bath until tomorrow – a scandal by hospital standards, – but I don’t mind.
My Hungarian grandfather and my great grandmother came over at 6, and they all celebrated my arrival with a tiny glass of wine. There are only 365 days to go and it will be my birthday again!
But until then, if you are interested, check out more pictures of me and my family on our family web page: http://sevigny.pressflex.com .
My parents like you and miss you a lot, and I am looking forward to meeting all of you soon,
Délia Gáspár
